WILLIAM SPENCER III - [Belleza -Art Bisbee-AZ]
I have found if I use fewer predefined words, shapes or well known narrative styles and instead use familiar images subtly and perhaps in ways we're not accustomed to seeing along with primitive shapes with which we may feel familiar on a subconcious level - we can create associations not ordinarily encountered. Memory is tapped through nostalgia - even when we are unable to define it perhaps as such.
This is an important and continually evolving aspect of my work.
Throughout my paintings, there appears a continuous thread even when on the surface they may be dissimilar. [William Spencer III, 2015]
The dynamic works of William Spencer III are perhaps like a tour through some subconscious world - we may feel it is familiar and yet it is not clear how. Over the last decade Belleza has placed over 600 of his intriguing works in collections throughout the Southwest and beyond; yet they are clearly identifiable even though spanning some 28 years and 1200-plus paintings through several identifiable 'periods' of artistic transition.
Spencer continues to paint with the idea that repeated familiar objects disassociated from within the environment we are accustomed to seeing them alongside primitive non-objective forms assists to prompt the subconscious and evoke memory. The idea that all aspects of experience is somehow constructed of repeated form - even if apparently random - directs his paintings still today. Repeated form stopped short of explanation, so that imagination is permitted to take one in an unaccustomed direction.
